„Palliativ“ leitet sich ab vom lateinischen Wort „pallium“ und bedeutet Umhang bzw. Mantel. So wird ein „schützender Mantel“ um einen unheilbar kranken Patienten gelegt und seine Beschwerden werden dadurch gelindert. So ist Palliativmedizin die „lindernde Medizin“.
